Kyanite, Greek for ‘blue’, is known to have an unusual and variable hardness quality. It often has irregular streaks making it difficult to cut. Popular colors include blue, green, and black although Kyanite can also be white, pink, or yellow. It occurs in Burma, Brazil, South Africa, Switzerland, Mexico and the US.
The name Turquoise means ‘Turkish stone’ because the trade route that brought it to Europe used to come via Turkey. Some high quality deposits are in the Middle East but there are many around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Israel, Mexico, Tanzania, New Mexico, and Arizona. Turquoise is used to promote wholeness, communication and spiritual expansion.
Quartz is among the most abundant of minerals and makes up a small part of a multitude of gemstones available today. Quartz crystals are found on every continent and quite possibly every country on Earth but important specimens come from Brazil, Madagascar, the USA and the Alps. It can have many inclusions like gold, rutile, and tourmaline and was believed to be eternally frozen, hence the name: Quartz, Slavic for 'hard', & Greek for 'ice'. Quartz is believed to amplify one's intentions and is good for clearing, cleansing, healing, and memory enhancement.
Named after the Labrador peninsula in Canada where it was originally found, Labradorite’s bright flashes of color are a result of schiller, or labradorescence. In the 1940s a similar material was found in Finland that exhibited the entire color spectrum, this was nicknamed Spectrolite. Larvikite is a silvery gray Labradorite from Scandinavia. Other deposits are found in Australia, Madagascar, Mexico, Russia and the United States. Labradorite is a stone of magic and protection.
