Quartz is among the most abundant of minerals and makes up a small part of a multitude of gemstones available today. Quartz crystals are found on every continent and quite possibly every country on Earth but important specimens come from Brazil, Madagascar, the USA and the Alps. It can have many inclusions like gold, rutile, and tourmaline and was believed to be eternally frozen, hence the name: Quartz, Slavic for 'hard', & Greek for 'ice'. Quartz is believed to amplify one's intentions and is good for clearing, cleansing, healing, and memory enhancement. Named for it’s smoky appearance, Smoky Quartz’s coloring is cause by gamma radiation, both natural and artificial. Very dark stones are called “morion” and “caingorm”

Carnelian got its name from its resemblance in color to the Kornel cherry, although colors can range from pale orange to deep red-orange. Carnelian, being a Chalcedony, is arranged in fibrous layers, giving it its stripes. The finest material comes from India but a lot of what is on the market comes from Brazil & Uruguay. In ancient times it was believed a bit of Carnelian would give the wearer courage in battle and help timid speakers become bold and eloquent. It supports qualities of leadership and courage.
