A variety of Quartz, Jasper’s microcrystals are laid out in sugar-like grains rather than fibrous layers like its close relative, Chalcedony. The name is derived from a Greek word meaning “spotted stone”—Jaspers can include up to 20% foreign material which can account for its wide variety of colors and patterns. Some important deposits are found in India, Russia, Brazil, France, Germany and the USA.
Quartz is among the most abundant of minerals and makes up a small part of a multitude of gemstones available today. Quartz crystals are found on every continent and quite possibly every country on Earth but important specimens come from Brazil, Madagascar, the USA and the Alps. It can have many inclusions like gold, rutile, and tourmaline and was believed to be eternally frozen, hence the name: Quartz, Slavic for 'hard', & Greek for 'ice'. Quartz is believed to amplify one's intentions and is good for clearing, cleansing, healing, and memory enhancement. Named for it’s smoky appearance, Smoky Quartz’s coloring is cause by gamma radiation, both natural and artificial. Very dark stones are called “morion” and “caingorm”.
