Obsidian, named after the Roman, Obsius, was used in ancient times in amulets and jewelry. It frequently has a gold or silver sheen to it, caused by inclusions. Deposits are in Ecuador, Indonesia, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and the United States.

Amethyst (Greek for 'non drunken') is the most highly valued stone in the quartz group. There are mines all over the world but the most well known are in Brazil.
