Formerly, Topaz was a widely used word that referred to any yellow, golden-brown, or even green gemstones. The name is probably derived from an island in the Red Sea, Topazos now known as Zabargad. The most common color is yellow with a tint of red and the most valuable is pink to reddish-orange. The coloring agents are iron and chromium. While it is naturally gold, blue, pink, brown, orange, colorless (and a few very rare colors like green), it is not uncommon for the colorless variety to be irradiated (heat treated) to create various shades of blue. In the Middle Ages, Topaz was believed to enhance mental powers and prevent insanity. Blue Topaz enhances mental processing and verbal skills and is good for third eye and throat chakras.
Aquamarine (Latin for 'water of the sea') is a blue/green v variety of beryl, found mostly in Brazil (the largest specimen of gemstone quality came from Brazil in 1910 and weighed 243 pounds!). The coloring agent that makes it such a lovely blue is iron. History records it’s first use in Greece sometime around 400 B.C. and in ancient lore it is said to be a treasure of mermaids, used as a talisman by sailors to bring good luck, fearlessness, and protection. It was also valued as a stone of eternal youth and happiness. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March and it promotes cooling, soothing, and clear communication
