The name diamond refers to its hardness (Greek for ‘the unconquerable’). It is made of pure carbon and it’s cutting resistance is 140x greater than rubies and sapphires, the two gemstones next in hardness after diamonds. Due to its optical effects, high hardness, and rarity the diamond is considered the king of gemstones. They have long been valued for their magical properties as well, believed in some cultures to provide protection from evil spirits and various dangers or to bring victory, courage, and faithfulness.
Pearls come in many colors, usually depending on mollusk and water that it grew in, and are usually found in oysters. They are built up mother-of-pearl (calcium carbonate) and though the beads used in jewelry are typically small, they are extraordinarily compact which makes it very hard to crush them.
