The name “agate” is supposedly derived from the river Achates (now called the Drillo) in Sicily, because it is thought to have been found there in ancient times. It is a banded, concentric shell-like chalcedony, can vary from nearly transparent to opaque, and comes in almost any color. Frequently, the dull grey agates (mostly from South America) are dyed to make them brighter and bring out their markings. Agates are usually found as ball-shaped nodules with sizes ranging from a fraction of an inch to several yards in circumference. If a nodule has crystals in the central cavity it is called a druse (or druzy quartz) and if it it completely filled in it is called a geode. Agates in general have lower intensity than other stones but are known for their stabilizing and strengthening influences. Individual types of agates have their own additional properties.
